Our Methodology

At Tax Free Salaries, we are committed to providing accurate, transparent, and verifiable information about salaries, employment benefits, and labour regulations across the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. This page explains our data sources, calculation methods, verification processes, and known limitations so that you can use our tools and guides with confidence.

Primary Data Sources

Our information is drawn from official government publications, established recruitment data platforms, and verified statistical agencies. We never fabricate data points or rely on unverified anecdotal sources. Below is a detailed breakdown of the primary sources we reference for each country.

United Arab Emirates

For UAE salary data, labour law information, and employment regulations, we reference the following official sources:

  • Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations: This is the primary UAE labour law that governs employment contracts, termination, gratuity calculations, and worker protections. All our UAE legal content is verified against this decree and its executive regulations.
  • Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE): We reference MOHRE publications for current regulations on the Wages Protection System (WPS), labour dispute resolution procedures, and ministerial decisions that supplement the labour law.
  • Wages Protection System (WPS): The WPS is a government-administered payroll system that tracks salary payments. We reference WPS guidelines to explain employer obligations around timely salary payment and worker protections.
  • Dubai Statistics Center and FCSC: Demographic data, cost of living indices, and economic indicators are sourced from the Dubai Statistics Center and the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre.
  • DIFC and ADGM Employment Regulations: Free zone employment regulations may differ from mainland law. Where relevant, we note these distinctions, referencing the specific employment laws of the Dubai International Financial Centre and Abu Dhabi Global Market.

Qatar

For Qatar-related content, our primary sources include:

  • Labour Law No. 14 of 2004: The foundational Qatar labour law that governs employment terms, end-of-service benefits, and worker rights. We reference this law directly for all legal content related to Qatar employment.
  • Law No. 17 of 2020 (Minimum Wage): Qatar's minimum wage legislation, which established the first non-discriminatory minimum wage in the GCC, is referenced in our salary guides and calculator validations.
  • Ministry of Labour (MOL): Publications from the Qatar Ministry of Labour regarding labour market reforms, particularly the abolition of the kafala sponsorship system and the introduction of worker mobility provisions.
  • Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA): Economic data, population statistics, and labour force surveys published by the PSA inform our cost of living and demographic analyses.

Saudi Arabia

For Saudi Arabia, we draw from the following sources:

  • Saudi Labour Law (Royal Decree No. M/51): The primary legislation governing employment in the Kingdom. We reference this law for all content related to employment contracts, notice periods, termination rules, and end-of-service award calculations.
  • General Organisation for Social Insurance (GOSI): GOSI regulations determine employer and employee social insurance contribution rates and annuity calculations. Our calculators reflect the current GOSI contribution percentages for both Saudi and non-Saudi employees.
  • Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (HRSD): HRSD publications on Saudization (Nitaqat), wage protection, and labour dispute resolution are referenced throughout our Saudi Arabia guides.
  • Mudad Platform: The government's wage protection platform, which monitors salary payments and compliance. We reference Mudad's guidelines in our employer compliance content.
  • General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT): Labour force surveys, wage statistics, and economic indicators published by GASTAT provide context for our salary range estimates.

Salary Data Methodology

Salary ranges published on Tax Free Salaries are compiled using a structured methodology designed to produce realistic and defensible estimates. Our approach includes the following steps:

  • Recruitment platform analysis: We aggregate published salary data from established recruitment platforms including Bayt.com, GulfTalent, Robert Half Middle East, and Hays Middle East. These platforms publish annual salary surveys based on actual placement data and employer submissions.
  • Job posting analysis: We monitor active job postings across major platforms to identify stated salary ranges for specific roles and seniority levels. This provides real-time market signal data that complements survey-based reports.
  • Cross-referencing: Each salary range is cross-referenced across at least two independent sources before publication. Where significant discrepancies exist between sources, we note the range and explain the variance.
  • Experience-based segmentation: Salaries are segmented by experience level (entry-level, mid-career, senior) to provide more actionable data. These segments are based on the experience bands used consistently by the survey sources.

Calculator Formulas

Our financial calculators implement the exact formulas specified in each country's labour law. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser, and no financial data is sent to our servers. Below are the key formulas used:

Gratuity (End-of-Service Benefits)

The end-of-service gratuity calculator applies the statutory formulas from each country's labour law:

  • UAE (limited contract): 21 days' basic salary for each year of the first five years, plus 30 days' basic salary for each additional year. The total gratuity is capped at two years' total salary.
  • UAE (unlimited contract): Same base formula, but with proportional reductions if the employee resigns before completing five years of service, as specified in Articles 51 and 52 of the Labour Law.
  • Qatar: Three weeks' basic salary for each year of service, with no cap. This is calculated based on the last drawn basic salary, as stipulated in Article 54 of Qatar Labour Law No. 14 of 2004.
  • Saudi Arabia: Half a month's salary for each of the first five years, plus one month's salary for each additional year. The calculation uses the last drawn salary including all allowances, as specified in Articles 84-86 of the Saudi Labour Law.

Salary Package Calculator

The package calculator disaggregates total compensation into its component parts (basic salary, housing allowance, transport allowance, and other benefits) based on typical market allocations observed across each country. The standard split follows common practice: 60% basic salary, 25% housing allowance, 10% transport allowance, and 5% other allowances. Users can customise these percentages to match their specific package structure.

Salary Converter

The currency converter uses mid-market exchange rates sourced from established financial data providers. Rates for pegged currencies (AED, QAR, SAR to USD) reflect the fixed peg rates. Cross-currency conversions use the pegged USD rate as an intermediary.

Verification Process

We maintain data accuracy through a multi-layered verification process:

  • Primary source verification: All legal and regulatory content is verified against the original legislative text in its official language (Arabic or English, depending on the jurisdiction).
  • Calculator testing: Financial calculators are tested against known scenarios and official examples published by government entities. We maintain a suite of test cases for each calculator to catch regressions when formulas are updated.
  • Periodic review: All content is reviewed on a quarterly basis to identify outdated information. Labour law amendments, ministerial decisions, and regulatory changes are incorporated as they take effect.
  • Community feedback: We encourage readers and professionals to report errors or discrepancies. Each report is investigated and, if confirmed, corrected within 48 hours.

Data Update Frequency

Salary data and labour law content are reviewed and updated according to the following schedule:

  • Salary ranges: Updated semi-annually, aligned with the major recruitment survey publication cycles (typically Q1 and Q3).
  • Labour law content: Updated within two weeks of any published amendment, ministerial decision, or regulatory change taking effect.
  • Calculator formulas: Updated immediately when a legislative change affects the underlying calculation. All changes are tested before deployment.
  • Cost of living data: Updated annually, aligned with the publication of official consumer price index data from each country's statistical authority.

The current data reflects regulations and market conditions as of 2026-06-24.

Limitations and Disclaimers

While we strive for accuracy, readers should be aware of the following limitations:

  • Salary ranges are indicative: Published salary ranges represent market averages and typical ranges. Individual salaries depend on employer, negotiation, credentials, industry, and market timing.
  • Legal information is general: Our legal content provides general guidance and does not constitute legal advice. Employment disputes and complex situations should be reviewed by a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction.
  • Free zone variations: Free zone regulations in the UAE (DIFC, ADGM, JAFZA, etc.) and Qatar (QFC, QSTP) may differ from mainland law. We note major differences where relevant but encourage readers to verify the regulations applicable to their specific zone.
  • Calculator estimates: Our calculators provide estimates for informational purposes only. Actual amounts may differ based on specific contract terms, employer policies, and applicable regulations.

Tax Free Salaries is editorially independent. We are not affiliated with any employer, recruitment agency, or government entity. Our content is produced independently and our recommendations, where offered, are based solely on objective analysis.
